北海道大学では，外部の人から見たときに，教員の所属するコース，部門，専攻の呼称が複数あり，どれを用いるべきかわかりにくい場合があります．

まず最初に結論を言ってしまうと，
「建築都市コース」というコース名は，「学部学生」向けの呼称です．よって，性格には「工学部・建築都市コース」です
次に，「大学院」，「大学院生」向けの呼称には
・「建築都市デザイン部門」
・「建築都市デザイン専攻」，「空間性能システム専攻」
というように「部門」と「専攻」が混在しています。

どちらも，「大学院の一部署」の名前です。そして，組織が重複した形に見えています。実際，教員や研究室は上記の組織に重複所属しているように見えていることがあります。

北海道大学大学院工学研究科は、2010年4月1日に研究組織（教員が所属する組織）としての「工学研究院」ならびに教育組織（大学院生が所属する組織）としての「工学院」および、工学研究科化学系3専攻と理学院化学専攻を再編した「総合化学院」に移行改組されました。それが下図になります。ここで重要なポイントは，「教員が所属する組織」の名前と「大学院生が所属する組織」の名前が違っており，大学院の入試願書を書く時などに，使い分けている，という点です。

例えば，A教授がいたとして，この人が論文執筆や実験など「研究」と，授業などの「教育」もしている場合，工学研究院と工学院の両方の立場で活動しているという体裁になります．A教授の所属としては，「工学研究院」なのですが，授業は「工学院」での活動になります。

そして，大学院入学希望者が，大学院入試願書において，希望指導教員を選択記入する場合には，「工学研究院」に所属するA教授のもとで，自分は，大学院学生として「工学院」に所属することを希望する，ということになります。

ここはとても重要なのでよく理解しておいてください。一般に，学生さんは，A教授の所属を知るために，ＷＥＢ検索をして，掲載記事の中の「所属名」を調べようとすると思います。しかし，Ａ教授の掲載記事には次の２通りの表記方法があるのです。一つは，教育関連の書類や記事。ここには，「工学院」のA教授，と記載されているはずです。もう一つは，研究関連の論文や記事。ここでは，「工学研究院」のA教授，と記載されているはずです。このように，学生がＡ教授の所属を検索しても，どちらが正しいのかわからない。「工学院」と「工学研究院」の大学内部での位置づけや定義は明確ですが正解を知るためには，このような説明をすべて聞かないと理解できないような状況になっています。

最後に，学生が大学院入試願書において，希望の指導教員を記入するときはどうしたらいいのか，あらためて記載します。
学生は，教育に関する組織に所属することになるので，「工学院」の所属になります．よって，願書には，例えば，「工学院・空間性能システム専攻・A教授」と記入することになります．これは「A教授のもとで志願者が工学院・空間性能システム専攻に所属する」ということであって，A教授そのものは「工学研究院建築都市部門」に所属しています。

はじめて聞くとかなりの混乱が起こりそうですが，，まぁ，ぼちぼち理解してもらえるとありがたいです。

At Hokkaido University, from an outsider’s perspective, there are multiple names for the courses and divisions to which faculty members belong, which can sometimes make it confusing to know which one to use.

First, to get straight to the point: The name “Architectural and Structural Design Course” is intended for “undergraduate students.” Therefore, to be exact, it is the “Architectural and Structural Design Course, School of Engineering.”

Next, regarding the designations intended for the “Graduate School” and “graduate students”:

• “Division of Architectural and Structural Design” (部門 – Bumon Division)
• “Division of Architectural and Structural Design” (専攻 – Senko Division), “Division of Human Environmental Systems” As you can see, there is a mixed meaning of “Divisions” (部門 – for research/faculty) and “Divisions” (専攻 – for education/students).

Both of these are names for “departments within the graduate-level organization.” Consequently, the organizational structures appear to overlap. In fact, it sometimes looks as if faculty members and laboratories hold overlapping affiliations in the aforementioned organizations.

To give you the conclusion here as well:

• Graduate students belong to the “Graduate School of Engineering” and are affiliated with either the “Division of Architectural and Structural Design” or the “Division of Human Environmental Systems,” depending on the division assigned to their academic supervisor. • Faculty members(Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors) belong to the “Division of Architectural and Structural Design under the Faculty of Engineering.”

This is a very important point, so please make sure you understand it clearly. Generally, to find out Professor A’s affiliation, a student would likely do a web search and look for the “affiliation name” in published articles. However, you will find two different ways Professor A’s affiliation is listed in these publications. One is in education-related documents or articles, where they will be listed as Professor A of the “Graduate School of Engineering.” The other is in research-related papers or articles, where they will be listed as Professor A of the “Faculty of Engineering.” Because of this, even if students search for Professor A’s affiliation, they cannot tell which one is correct. While the definitions and internal positioning of the “Graduate School of Engineering” and the “Faculty of Engineering” are clear within the university, it has created a situation where you cannot figure out the right answer without hearing this full explanation.

Finally, let me reiterate what students should do when filling out their desired academic supervisor on the graduate school admission application. Since students will belong to the educational organization, their affiliation will be with the “Graduate School of Engineering.” Therefore, on the application form, they should write, for example: “Graduate School of Engineering, Division of Human Environmental Systems, Professor A.” This indicates that “the applicant will be enrolled in the Division of Human Environmental Systems, Graduate School of Engineering, under the supervision of Professor A,” while Professor A themselves actually belongs to the “Division of Architectural and Structural Design, Faculty of Engineering.”

This might sound quite confusing when you hear it for the first time, but I would appreciate it if you could gradually come to understand how it works.
